The tenth annual Central North Carolina Pagan Pride Day (PPD) returns to Raleigh, September 18th and 19th at the NC State Fairgrounds (Gate 5)
This will be the tenth turn of the wheel for pagans celebrating the annual harvest festival and charity fundraiser. The local event is part of a global movement that strives to advance religion and the elimination of prejudice and discrimination based on religious beliefs. Events are held globally between August and October. In addition to speakers, vendors and live performances, the events include a significant charity component. The Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina and Rex Blood Services are the local beneficiaries.
Open to the general public, this festival offers two days of entertainment and education in the form of a large variety of social, commercial and spiritual activities. Attendees are welcome to join or observe rituals, attend workshops, and meet with a variety of local groups in a festival environment. Over 40 vendors will be on hand selling a variety of crafts and providing educational information. According to Michelle Basnett, coordinator of the local event, “This is an opportunity for people who follow a pagan path to come together and celebrate, for the broader community to see that although our spiritual paths may be different we are nonetheless involved in our communities, and to share in the bounty of the harvest by helping those less fortunate during these difficult economic times.”
In 2009 attendees donated over 2,000 pounds of food and $550 in cash to the Food Bank of Central and Eastern NC, and 22 units of blood to Rex Blood Services. Over 7,500 pounds of food have been donated since 2001, and over 50 units of blood since 2008. Attendees are encouraged to bring the following food or non-food items:
- Canned Meals: Stews, Soups, Tuna, Ravioli, etc.
- Peanut Butter, Cereal, Canned Fruits and Vegetables, Rice, Pasta and Dried Beans
- Hygiene Items: Toothpaste, Shaving Items, Soap, etc.
- Infant Products: Diapers, Wipes, Formula, Infant Cereal
Workshops by community members are a hallmark of Pagan Pride Day events. This year there will be 14 workshops on a variety of topics including: introductions to Divination, Belly Dancing,
Ecology, Yoga, Astrology, Druidry, Hypnosis, Podcasting, Pagan Leadership, etc. Live music and entertainment will be provided by Ghosts of Erin, Cherie Lassiter, Annwyn, Thunder and Spice, and the European Medieval Arts of Arms. Rituals will be held during the weekend including daily opening rituals, and evening ritual on Saturday and the closing ritual Sunday evening.

According to Laura Shook-Marino, of Rex Health Services, “The need for blood donation for transfusions is continuous. Each year we provide approximately 20,000 pints of blood to the region’s hospitals, and as the local population continues to grow, so does demand.” A session takes approximately 45 minutes and provides a pint of blood, which is capable of serving up to three patients. Collection will begin at 12 noon and run to 4 pm during the festival.
