Notes from Toad Song Farm
Now is the time of year to start putting your garden to bed for the winter. You should trim perennials and mulch them in. Pull out the spent annuals and weed your garden one last time. Potted plants you want to bring inside should be trimmed up and repotted if needed. A little fertilizer won’t hurt right now, either. Just remember to put your dormant potted plants in a place where their roots won’t freeze and be sure to water them a little if you see that the soil in their pots is getting dry.
As for other plants inside: 1) Make sure they have adequate light, either by placing them near a window or under grow lights. 2) Water them only as needed. Overwatering breeds disease and attracts insects to plants. It’s better to let your indoor plants dry out a bit between watering than to keep the soil too moist. 3) make sure to check the airflow around your indoor plants. Air should circulate around the plants, but they should not be directly in the path of an air vent or an open door.
Fall is also the time to make your plans for next spring’s herb garden. Mary is taking wish list requests for hard-to-find herbs that you’d like to have in your garden. So, email a list of the unusual herbs you’d like to grow to her @ Toadsongfarm@earthlink.net BEFORE October 15, 2025, so she can add it to her seed list.
What’s Hop-penning at Toad Song Farm
We have 2 more events on schedule for the 2025 year. The first is our annual Dumb Supper and Samhain celebration. It’s going to be held on Saturday, November 1, starting at 5:00PM. Guests are encouraged to bring a small pumpkin to carve or decorate for the altar. And/or bring an item representing an ancestor for the altar. We’ll work on our pumpkins and decorating our Ancestors altar from @5:00 until @6:30. Weather permitting, once we’ve got the altar ready, we’ll begin our celebration with a ritual in the labyrinth, followed by our version of a dumb supper. For the dumb supper, everyone will be served a bowl of stew and some crusty bread. Once everyone is served, we’ll ring a bell and observe 20 minutes of silence while we enjoy our stew with our ancestors. While you eat, think about what you’d like to ask your ancestors or what stories you’d share with them if they still in this plane of existence and listen for their response. After the closing bell tolls concluding the dumb supper, we’ll share in a more extensive potluck of appetizers and desserts out by the fire pit. Stay as long as you like. BYOB is permitted. Feel free to write any notes to your ancestors on paper provided and toss them in the fire to be read across the veil. Look for more information on the dumb supper Facebook event page.
The last event for 2025 at Toad Song Farm is our annual Stone Soup Party. This year it will be held on Saturday, December 20, starting @5:00PM. Guests are asked to bring something for the pot or for the table. You should also bring a clean container to take soup with you when you leave to share with a neighbor or a friend who can’t join us for the evening. (It’s a great way to break the ice with new neighbors or reestablish good relationships with old ones.). There are usually door prizes for those who find a stone in their soup bowl. Come early and stay late around the fire. Bring your hand drum or other instruments, BYOB, even bring a tent and camp out for the night if you want. Look for more information on the stone soup party Facebook event page.

Food for Thought: with Sarah Lawson
It’s official Fall!! And that means changing leaves, cooler air, and Halloween! This cheeseburger corn muffin recipe is quick and easy and will be great to have at your own or bring to a potluck party!
You’ll need: *One package of your favorite cornbread mix
*Egg, milk, and oil according to your cornbread package
*2-3 Tbsp. olive oil for cooking onion and hamburger
*A pound of hamburger
*One small onion, diced
*About 2 tablespoons each of ketchup and mustard (it’s more to taste than a full measurement)
*About a cup (or a little more) of your favorite shredded cheese. Cheddar or Colby Jack works really well.
To make:
*Preheat your oven according to the package directions on your cornbread. Be sure to use the muffin tin option.
*In a medium pan, heat your oil and add your hamburger and onion. Brown the hamburger and drain most of the grease. Salt and pepper if you’d like, to taste.
*Once the hamburger and onion are done, mix your cornbread mix according to the package and add in the ketchup, mustard, and hamburger mix. Stir to combine.
*Add in the cheese and gently stir again to combine.
*Scoop into greased or lined muffin tins.
*Bake according to the package instructions. (Note it may take a few extra minutes for the muffins to fully cook with the ketchup and mustard in the mix). Once a toothpick comes out clean, they’re done.
*Serve with extra ketchup and mustard on the side.
Enjoy! This recipe came from an old cookbook that we’ve used for Halloween parties in the past. I hope you like it!
