Autumn is finally here. New Beginnings for many of us even though fall is usually dying down with Mother Nature. I can’t even tell you how many people I know that love this season above the rest. We have added so much to the store and as I write this we are decorating for the season. We say goodbye to Sheena; she is off to bigger and better adventures. Jess and Vickie is still with us and I am coming into the shop 2 to 3 times a week.
We have asked our volunteers to step in for now and help us out during the upcoming events. We are so grateful for all the help, support and patronized you all are giving us.

New soap display made by Highland Lather LLC, they are so good and are flying off the shelf.
For the season we have Hazey Starr Design dolls. You have to come in and see them. Gem Bracelets; a new addition with handmade stone and bead bracelets. We now have 19 local artists selling their wares in our store and hopefully you will get to meet them during one of our holiday artist bazaars on the second Saturday of October, November and December.

Friday October 25th: 6PM. Open Discussion for Bone Class Members: Come join Danielle on an open discussion about Osteomancy, if you are a previous student and have questions, come and ask them! Are you a new student and are wondering what the old art of Osteomancy is all about; this is the event for you! Free event, tips appreciated.

Thursday, October 31st: 6 PM. A Special Samhain Osteomancy Class (Bone Throwing) for beginners with Wild Curiosities 6PM. Come and learn all about bone throwing and what it all entails, down to even walking off with your very own kit. $50 for the class, pre-register, and its $40!

We will have a booth on Saturday, October 26, 10 AM to 4 PM Elm City Fest and car Show. Music, games, crafts, inflatables, food and car show. Swing by and say hi at Osvaldo and Kay’s home. We will be decorated for Halloween and handing out candy.

Other and Upcoming Events

Local Artist Bazaar: Shop local and Small Business. We are having events 3 times this fall. Second Saturday in October 12, November 9, and December 14. Events start at 11AM and closes around 4 PM
This will give everyone to show and sell their wares and for the rest of us to buy locally and with venders we know. Music, tea, mulled cider, soups and other goodies.

Toad Song Farm
2024 has been a great year at Toad Song Farm so far, and we’re looking forward to lots more good things to happen this year. This time of year we are getting the greenhouse ready for winter and starting our propagation for next spring. Volunteer interns are always welcome to help with whatever projects we have in our queue. Weekends, Mondays, and Wednesdays are the days to come out if you want to lend a hand and learn a little more about herbs and plants.
Wise Women Retreat 2024 was a huge success! Our groups made fancy brooms and learned the witch’s dance. Lots of great food was shared, and we all had a chance to recharge our systems. Next year’s Wise Women Retreat is scheduled for September 19-21, 2025, and will be all about medicine making.
We’re hosting 2 more big events for this year:
First up is our Annual Dumb Supper and Samhain celebration that will be held on Saturday, October 26. Bring a pumpkin to carve, a dessert or snack food to share, and come dressed in your best ritual attire as we dine with our ancestors and share a special Samhain ritual.
The second big event is our annual Stone Soup Party and Yule feast on Saturday, December 21. Everyone is asked to bring something for the pot or for the table and a clean take away container. I’ll get 2 pots of soup started – 1 vegetarian, and 1 for omnivores. The stones and the items the community brings always makes the best pot of soup. We’ll spend the evening making merry with friends and neighbors. After the fellowship and feast, be sure to take some soup with you to share with those who can’t join us.
Look for us as we visit Truely Unique on the 2nd Saturday of October, November, and December. We plan to bring our non-plant products and Mary’s massage chair so you can see what all we have going on here at Toad Song Farm.

Zucchini Parmesan Crisps

1 lb. zucchini or squash (about 2 medium-sized)
1/4 cup shredded parmesan 1/4 cup Panko breadcrumbs
1 tablespoon olive oil 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
Freshly ground pepper, to taste
• Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Line two baking sheets with foil and spray lightly with olive oil.
• Slice zucchini or squash into 1/4 inch-thick rounds. Toss rounds with oil, coating well.
• In a wide bowl or plate, combine breadcrumbs, parmesan, salt and pepper.
• Place rounds in parmesan-breadcrumb mixture, coating both sides of each round, pressing to adhere. The mixture will not completely cover each round, but provides a light coating on each side.
• Place rounds in a single layer on baking sheets. Sprinkle any remaining breadcrumb mixture over the rounds.
• Bake for about 22 to 27 minutes, until golden brown. (There is no need to flip them during baking — they crisp up on both sides as is.)

Samhain Cider:
2 quarts apple cider 1/2-cup sugar
1/2-teaspoon nutmeg 1/2-teaspoon cinnamon
1/4-teaspoon ginger 1/2 Cup apricot brandy
…In large pot combine the apple cider, the sugar, nutmeg, cinnamon and ginger. Simmer slowly on low heat for about 15 min. Add the brandy and serve cider while warm. Refrigerate the left over. Serves 8.

Butter Rum and Butter Beer
(Popular with the Harry Potter crowd)
Rosemary Grace
Buttered rum was a popular recipe in colonial America, and it’s easy to see why — it’s GOOD. You can brew this up in your crockpot, ladle out a nice big mug and sit by the fire on a chilly winter evening. It’s the perfect warm drink for Yule. If you leave out the rum, your kids can enjoy it too (here’s a tip — when your little one wants to have a Harry Potter party, make a rum-free pot of this recipe and call it butter beer). Ingredients:
2 Quarts apple juice 2 C firmly packed brown sugar
1 stick butter (use the real stuff, not margarine) 3 Tbs. cinnamon
1 tsp. ground cloves 1 tsp. nutmeg
2 C. your favorite rum Refrigerated whipped dessert topping
Cinnamon sticks and nutmeg for garnish
Preparation: Warm up the apple juice and brown sugar in a pot. Add the butter (dice up the stick before you put it in there, so it’ll melt faster). Stir until the butter is melted. Add the spices and the rum. Cover the pot, and simmer on low for 2 – 4 hours. Ladle into mugs for serving. Top each with a dollop of whipped topping and a cinnamon stick. Sprinkle with a dash of nutmeg.
Crockpot Wassail
1/2 gallon apple cider 1 cup cranberry juice 1/2 cup honey 2 orange cut into sections 2 or 3 cinnamon sticks 1 tablespoon allspice 1 teaspoon ginger 1. Plug in crockpot and put on low. Add the apple cider and cranberry juice. 2. Mix well with spoon. Add honey. 3. Cut oranges and add to the mixture. Drop in cinnamon stick 4. Add allspice and ginger stir well. Add more apple cider if needed. 5. Cook on low heat for two hours or more. Stir occasionally. Serve hot.

The Novel Nest Bookstore and Manic Creations, LLC presents to you, Reading for Our Future, a back to school reading event for the youth here in Wilson. We have teamed up with Truely Unique as our sponsor to deliver you something positive for this community in hopes of directing our youth towards other paths in life where they can thrive and be successful! We have a spectacular lineup for you! There will be hairstylists and barbers on set to give back to school cuts FREE of charge, donating their time and service to our children! We have FREE face painting for the kids as well as games and prizes! There will be raffles for the parents with awesome prizes including apparel from DumbRich! We have some amazing vendors serving you with some of their talented work! There is way too much to list! I look forward to seeing you there! You’re not going to wanna miss it! Lammas, Lughnasadh

First of the three Harvests, honoring all of the Sun Gods. Bring Forth the First Fruits and Celebrate.

Herbs: Ginseng, Eucalyptus, Alfalfa, Frankincense, Hops, Rosemary, Sage, Calendula, & Fenugreek.

Foods: Corn, Wheat, Rye, Rice, Barley, and other grains. Blackberries, honey butter, tomatoes, cucumbers, and all other first Harvest foods.

Rocks & Stones: Moss Agate, Citrine, Tourmaline, Amber, Green Garnet, Green Jasper, Bloodstone, Topaz, and Malachite.

Incense:   Energy, Sandalwood, Greenman, Frankincense, Fire, and Earth.

Herb of the Month: Linden

An antioxidant reduces fatty tissue in blood vessels, sore throats, headaches, nervous stomachs, and insomnia, reduces fevers, may lower blood pressure by relaxing the heart and improving blood flow.   Safe for Children.  Do not take within 2 hours of taking vitamin or minerals. It will interfere with absorption of the nutrients.

Historically: Lithuanian Women once made sacrifices to the Linden tree as part of a ritual.

Very popular in France as a after dinner drink. The drink is called Tilleul.

Spiritually: Linden protects, gives luck, immortality, and love. In Europe they hang branches over their door for protection. Linden works well in good luck charms.

Crockpot Bacon Cheese Potatoes

Ingredients: 1/4 pound bacon, diced – I cook it first in the oven so that it is “done” and browned then I dice it and place in the crock pot.

2 medium onions thinly sliced.

4 medium potatoes thinly sliced

1/2 pound cheddar cheese, thinly sliced (shredded is fine)

Pepper, green onions, and parsley

1/2 stick butter

Layer half each of the bacon, onions and potatoes in the crockpot.

Season to taste with herbs and dot with (real) butter.

Repeat layers of bacon, onions, potatoes and cheese.

Cover and cook on low for up to 6 hours (check at 4 hours – depending on your crock pot).

Add cheese for the last 20 – 30 minutes and enjoy!
